Our History
Camp Wahanowin was founded in 1955 by Harold Nashman and his family. The Nashman family has operated a traditional summer camp program, Camp Wahanowin, for the past 50 years. The camp has gradually expanded to include a variety of different camp programs. The Wahanowin Residential Outdoor Centre is host to school groups, music camps, conferences and reunions during May, June, September and October. The Toronto Board of Education has operated a music camp at our site in late June since 1971 and The National Music Camp of Canada, which takes place during the two weeks prior to September's Labour Day weekend, has celebrated over 40 years of providing a quality, non-profit musical and recreational camp experience for children.

Our Directors & Staff
The Wahanowin Residential Outdoor Centre is directed by Bruce Nashman and Peter Thistlethwaite, who are year round directors for all of Wahanowin's programs. Tan Robertson, our Assistant Director, has been working with the camp since 1991, especially with spring and fall groups. The three of them will work closely with your group during the planning stages and tailor the program to meet your goals. In addition to our Directors, various senior staff and university students return year after year to facilitate the program.

Our Facilities
Wahanowin comprises 150 acres on the shores of Lake Couchiching just 90 minutes north of Toronto. The site is a rolling countryside made up of wooded lots, spacious open fields and water sources. There are ample areas for extensive land sports, hiking trails and lots of untouched natural areas. Additional acreage and shoreline on nearby Lake St. John, a 1½km hike from camp, provides a wilderness camping area, a high ropes element, a limestone rock quarry and additional swimming and fishing waters.

Our rehearsal facilities include a fully equipped theatre, eight recreation halls (four of which are outfitted with heating), a century stone farmhouse and numerous art and crafts studios. Athletics are accommodated on two baseball diamonds, a soccer field, a ball hockey rink, six tennis courts, two basketball courts and three beach volleyball courts. In addition, we have a new nine hole par three golf course. There are also five campfire pits on our main site and one at the wilderness camping site.

Our beautiful bay is ideal for canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing and other water sports. Team building and personal triumphs are achieved on our challenging and adventurous ropes course, climbing wall, initiative tasks course and zip-line.

We have two large theatres that each have heating, seating for over four hundred, plus professional lighting. Because of the diversity of our programs we have audio and visual equipment, including amplifiers, speakers, tape and CD players, all of which can be used by your group.

Accommodation & Dining Facilities
Wahanowin can provide accommodation for over five hundred people. Our rustic but comfortable cabins have electricity and washroom facilities. Many are equipped with showers and for those that are not we offer three large shower houses with plenty of hot water. The majority of our cabins contain single sized bunk beds, although we can provide over 30 cabins with double beds or larger single beds. You must bring your own bedding with you.

Our Dining Hall is located on the lakeshore, paneled in knotty pine with cedar tables and benches and can provide seating for over five hundred people. Meals are served in large quantities that are well balanced in accordance with Canada's Food Guide. Every meal begins with a first course followed by a hot entree and dessert. Meals are served hot, fast and in unlimited portions. We can accommodate and provide options for anyone with special dietary needs (vegetarian, lactose intolerant, allergies, religious restrictions, etc.).

Safety & Security
As an accredited Ontario Camping Association (OCA) member, we are required to meet standards of safety set by them. We strive to not only meet these standards, but surpass them. All of our staff participate in extensive safety, first aid and CPR training during pre-camp. We have safety requirements that must be followed at certain activity areas. These are applied to every participant, whether they are children or adults (e.g. PFD's must be worn when in a kayak and Ropes participants must be supervised by our staff and wear helmets and harnesses, etc.).

Our grounds are patrolled each night from 11:00pm to 7:00am by a night watchman. He ensures no one trespasses on camp property and is there to assist you in the event of an emergency or if you require information. He knows the whereabouts of our directors and senior staff if you need them.

Our staff have received basic training to take care of any first aid needs. In the event of an emergency the camp is less than fifteen minutes away from Orillia's Soldier Memorial Hospital.

Nearby Amenities
Camp Wahanowin has an ideal location; almost in the "Muskokas," we are surrounded by the natural beauty of water, forest and fields, yet can be reached from Toronto in only 90 minutes. Ten minutes from Orillia, the closest city, there is an abundance of stores and places to go (in the event your group would like to venture out of camp for an evening or if you have to pick up supplies). There are many stores, restaurants, a theatre, Casino Rama and a hospital; anything you could want or need is easily accessible.
