April Young
Position: Director of Fun

General Information:
April started her Wahanowin Career at age 8 as a bear camper. She loved everything about camp…she loved the plays (even without any talent she managed to feel like a star) …she loved the teams… (again, zipo on the talent thing… though afraid of the ball Wahanowin kept her dream alive of joining the majors one day!- Didn’t happen!) Most of all April loved her extended family… her cabin mates who are still some of her best friends today and her counselors who even after camp continued to change her life by making her feel instantly cool when they ran into her and hugged her on the first day of F.H.C.I.! Year after year from the day camp ended to the day it began camp was on her mind! It was only natural when she met with a career counselor in grade 11 she decided to become a Camp Director one day! The first step was to be a Waha counselor! April still remembers the thrill of being O.D. for the first time and marching really loud up the stairs to hear the kids all whisper shhh! WHAT A RUSH! From starting the Intercamp Cheerleading team to leading aerobics from the roof of the dining hall…to making secret potions that instantly got rid of homesickness...Being a counselor was for April as good as it gets! April loved camp sooooo much that she thought she should share her great Waha experiences with some kids who could really use a good time. At 18 she made the heart wrenching decision to leave Camp Wahanowin to work at Camp Trillium, a camp for kids with cancer. April spent the next 8 years working at Trillium and other special needs camps while focusing her education on becoming a Camp Director. She received her B.A. in Sociology from the biggest camp in the universe… The University of Western Ontario (where she was a Head Soph known as MAMA for the Off Campus cabin of approx. 2000 campers!) She then went on to Boston University to receive her Masters in Education and her C.A.G.S. in Therapeutic Recreation and Special Education combined. Upon graduation April was a Founding Committee Member of Camp Bucko (a camp for Burn Survivors) and Camp Oki (a Pediatric Cardiology Camp) and became the director of Camp Oochigeas and Camp Trillium (both camps for children with cancer). She is the past Chairperson of the Ontario Camping Association Standards Committee. During this hiatus April married the love of her life Shawn (Eagle camper Circa 1976) and since had 2 campers of her own (Joey 7 and Lily 5 ). As a mother April could think of no better place to have her kids grow up! Sooooo…. in 2006 April came home to Camp Wahanowin as our Director of Fun! (A.K.A. THE D.O.F.!) She was thrilled to have the opportunity to help create magic for another generation of campers! April found it funny that things hadn’t changed much over the last 18 years…campers and staff still wore pajama’s all day…tuck was still the highlight of many kids lives…and Wahanowin still had more spirit than anyplace on earth (Shake your bushy tail anyone?)!!! Needless to say April is back for what is shaping up to be the best summer in her history of summers!!!
